These particular variants of Hawthorn’s rule appear to be especially made with added
embellishment in ivory and German silver as presentation rules to a particular
dignitary, this one to “Robt. Hawthorn Snr. Walbottle” the inventor. A number of
examples are known, all have been made by John B. Morris of London (fl 1825 – 1843)
of who little is known. Some ivory bits are missing, whether you think this an
improvement or prefer the simple design of the standard is up to you.
